Over 600 more households will be able to walk safely on a sidewalk to Sands Montessori, Stanbery Park, and the Mt. Washington central business district thanks to a Safe Routes to School grant recently awarded to the City of Cincinnati. The $450,000 grant will be dispersed allowing construction to begin in fiscal year 2021-22. The sidewalk will run down one side of Sussex and then continuing to connect with existing sidewalks on Coffey and Kenlee.
Madelyn Gerker, a current 6th grader at Sands, led the charge along with the Mt. Washington Community Council, the City of Cincinnati D.O.T.E., Cincinnati Public Schools, the Sands Montessori Parent Organization, and several elected officials. In order to apply for the grant, the school’s outdated safety plan needed to be updated.
It is the hope of all those involved that the City of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Public Schools will work together to ensure all of our schools have updated safety plans moving forward and will therefore be able to apply for some of the $4 million in federal funds the State of Ohio disperses annually through the Safe Routes to School grants.
